Disgraced former celebrity agent Ralph Carr was sentenced to six years in prison on Tuesday, with a minimum of four years, after being convicted of two counts of rape and one of sexual assault. Carr, prosecuted under his full name Ralph Carnovale-Carr, was found by a jury to have committed the offenses at his Melbourne West warehouse home in March 2023.
During the sentencing at the Melbourne County Court, Judge Frank Gucciardo described Carr's conduct as "appalling" and an "egregious breach of trust." The court heard that Carr, 66, raped the woman twice after engaging in sexual touching and attempting further sexual acts despite her explicit rejections. The victim had told Carr, "If I let you do this, if I let you f*** me, you will never respect me," and later stated she was not comfortable in an environment of alcohol and drugs.
Carr, known for managing high-profile figures including AFL champion Dustin Martin and launching the careers of artists like Vanessa Amorosi and Kate Ceberano, appeared via videolink from the Melbourne Assessment Prison. He was previously married to pop star Tina Arena.
Carr's legal team attempted to secure a stay of sentence, with his barrister, Dermot Dann KC, arguing that the guilty verdicts represented a "miscarriage of justice." Dann stated that Carr maintained his innocence and that the conviction had severely impacted his mental health, leading to suicidal thoughts.
Forensic psychiatrist Jackie Rakov testified that Carr's suicide risk was "dynamic" and likely to increase following the unsuccessful stay application, noting he had already experienced suicidal thoughts and had a demonstrated history of being suicidal. Carr has been held in the Melbourne Assessment Prison's management unit, described as a harsh environment with 23-hour lockdowns, often used for high-profile prisoners or those needing separation for behavioral issues.
Judge Gucciardo acknowledged that Carr's career is effectively over due to his conviction, which he considered as "extracurricular punishment" and a factor in specific deterrence. The prosecution had urged the court to impose a significant prison term, emphasizing the nature and circumstances of the offenses and asking the judge not to forget the victim.
