Ellie Waters-Barnes, now 25, has graduated from Keele University with a medical degree, a journey inspired by her own fight with a rare and aggressive cancer. At 14 years old, Waters-Barnes was diagnosed with stage four alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, facing a one in five chance of survival.
Her diagnosis in September 2015 marked a turning point, transforming her life from that of a healthy teenager to a patient undergoing intensive treatment. The process involved 18 months of care at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, including nine months of intensive chemotherapy, 28 sessions of radiotherapy, and a subsequent year of maintenance chemotherapy. During this period, she experienced significant physical challenges, including weight loss, hair loss, and the need for tube feeding.
Despite the physical toll, Waters-Barnes views her past struggles as a unique asset in her medical career. She stated that her personal experience with cancer treatment provides her with a perspective that not all medical professionals possess, describing it as a "superpower."
Now in remission and having graduated, Waters-Barnes is able to leverage her understanding of the patient experience to inform her approach to care. She expressed gratitude for being alive and able to pursue her chosen profession.
