Former BYU Cougars football player Curtis Brown and his wife, Kim, are grieving the loss of their two-year-old son, Haze, who died in a drowning accident on July 26. The accident occurred at the family's residence in Clovis, California.
A GoFundMe page established by a family friend, Chandler Pearson, described the event as an "unimaginable loss." Pearson wrote on the fundraising site that the donations would help ease the financial burden of funeral expenses and other unexpected costs, allowing the family to focus on healing.
According to police, a family member found Haze unresponsive in the pool and immediately called 911. Emergency services, including police, EMTs, and firefighters, responded to the scene. CPR was administered, but it was unsuccessful. Haze was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Clovis Police Department spokesman Ty Wood told the New York Post that "adults should never let children swim unsupervised and should always learn CPR and keep rescue equipment nearby."
Curtis Brown played five seasons with the BYU Cougars from 2002 to 2006. He led the Mountain West Conference with 14 rushing touchdowns in 2005 and finished his collegiate career with 3,241 rushing yards and 1,309 receiving yards. He signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2007 but was released before the regular season.
The GoFundMe page had raised over $77,000 toward its $100,000 goal as of the time of reporting. The Brown family has five children, including their son Trey and triplets Cruze, Julie, and Kash.
