Former Blue Jays Pitcher Brian Wolfe Dies at 45

Brian Wolfe, a former pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 15, at the age of 45. His wife, Rachell Wolfe, announced the news on social media, stating that Wolfe had passed away after a "difficult and torturous battle."

No specific cause of death has been confirmed. A native of Fullerton, California, Wolfe was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the sixth round of the 1999 MLB Draft out of Servite High School. He spent six years in the Twins' minor league system, reaching Triple-A, before being released in May 2005. He finished that season in the Milwaukee Brewers' system.

In January 2006, the Brewers traded Wolfe to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Corey Koskie. The right-hander progressed quickly through the Blue Jays' minor league system, making his major league debut in May 2007. In his rookie season, Wolfe appeared in a career-high 38 MLB games, posting a 2.98 ERA out of the bullpen.

Wolfe pitched in 72 major league games across three seasons with the Blue Jays, accumulating a record of 5-5 with a 3.81 ERA. After the 2009 season, he became a free agent and began a nine-year career overseas in Japan. He pitched for the Nippon Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball from 2010 to 2013, starting 77 games. His final season with the Fighters coincided with Shohei Ohtani's first year in Japan.

Wolfe retired from professional baseball at the age of 37. Former MLB outfielder Brandon Barnes also confirmed Wolfe's death in a video posted to Facebook on Wednesday.
