Former Bachelor Star Sam Wood Held in Stark Queensland Police Cell Awaiting Bail Hearing
The reality television personality faces charges of assault occasioning bodily harm and strangulation in a domestic setting.
Sam Wood, known for his appearance on "The Bachelor," is spending his fourth night in a basic police cell at the Maroochydore Watchhouse on Queensland's Sunshine Coast as he awaits a bail application hearing. The 46-year-old fitness guru was arrested on Saturday night following reports of an alleged domestic violence incident at a Noosa property where he was staying.
The conditions inside the watchhouse cells are described as stark, featuring two concrete sleeping platforms with thin mattresses and basic bedding. A toilet and sink are located within the cell, with only a partial wall offering limited privacy. A solid door includes a small plexiglass viewing panel and a hatch for passing items to detainees.
According to a 2024 report by the Queensland Police Union, the Maroochydore Watchhouse has experienced persistent issues, including mould, scabies outbreaks, and cockroach problems. The facility has 19 cells and 27 beds, alongside specialized cells for violent detainees, observation, and holding purposes. As of Tuesday morning, the watchhouse was at 85.2 percent occupancy with 23 individuals held, placing it in the union's workplace health and safety 'alert' category.
Legal Aid Queensland advises that individuals in police custody can be searched, have belongings removed, and be fingerprinted and photographed. Visitors are generally not permitted, though legal representatives can attend.
Wood was arrested at a luxury beachfront resort on Hastings Street, where rooms can cost up to $3,000 per night. He has since been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm in a domestic violence context and strangulation in a domestic setting. Wood is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
