Abdul Nabizada, a former translator for the British Army, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a 19-year-old woman in Edinburgh in 2021. Nabizada attacked the woman after failing to drive her home from a night out.
Nabizada, 36, had worked as an interpreter for the British, Danish, and American militaries in Afghanistan. He denied the charges, citing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) stemming from an explosive device detonation during his service. The judge presiding over the High Court trial described Nabizada's actions as an "appalling betrayal of trust" after he was found guilty by unanimous verdict last month.
Nabizada, a father of four, moved to the UK in 2016 and had applied for British citizenship. Before his military service, he worked as a tailor in Afghanistan and translated his native Farsi, as well as Dari, Pashto, and Arabic.
