Former American Idol Singer Sweats as Songs for Mistress Played in Murder Trial

Caleb Flynn, a former American Idol contestant, appeared visibly embarrassed in court as songs he allegedly wrote for his mistress were played during his trial for the murder of his wife. Flynn, 40, is accused of shooting his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37, in their Tipp City, Ohio, home on February 16 and staging the scene to resemble a home invasion. He has pleaded not guilty, maintaining that an intruder killed his wife while he slept in an adjacent room with their two daughters.

Prosecutors contend that Flynn had a long-term affair with 24-year-old Alleigha Botner. On Thursday, members of Ashley Flynn's family reportedly struggled to contain their laughter as the songs, which Botner testified were written about their affair, were played. Flynn was observed wiping sweat from his brow as the music filled the courtroom, his ears turning bright red.

Some of the song lyrics presented in court included references to the anniversary of the start of Flynn and Botner's relationship and declarations of enduring affection. Botner, who met Flynn in 2022 while she was an intern and he was a volunteer at a Dayton, Ohio, church, testified that their relationship turned romantic in early 2024 after she experienced a breakup. She stated that Flynn expressed hatred for his wife and that they used derogatory language when referring to Ashley Flynn.

Botner also testified that she communicated with Flynn until midnight on the night of the alleged murder and sent him screenshots of research on divorce proceedings, including information on how to conceal infidelity and manage custody issues. According to Botner, Flynn's last message to her before the incident was, "Good night, tomorrow's a big day. I've got to get to bed. I choose you, I'm about to be free."

Botner stated that the last time she saw Flynn before he appeared in court was at Ashley Flynn's parents' house on February 16, hours after his wife's death. She recounted that Flynn's initial words to her were, "It didn't happen the way we thought it would, did it?"
