Former American Idol Contestant Found Guilty of Wife's Murder
Caleb Flynn, who appeared on the singing competition in 2013, is facing life in prison for the February 2026 killing of his wife, Ashley.
A jury has convicted Caleb Flynn, 40, a former contestant on American Idol, of murdering his wife, Ashley, in their Ohio home on February 16, 2026. The verdict, reached after two and a half hours of deliberation, means Flynn faces life in prison without parole. Flynn, who had pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence, visibly reacted with shock and tears as the guilty verdict was read in Miami County court.
Prosecutors argued that Flynn, a pastor on the church's worship team, staged a break-in to cover up the murder. They presented evidence of a years-long affair between Flynn and Alleigha Botner, a worship leader at his church. Botner testified that Flynn had expressed hatred for his wife and discussed killing her. Evidence suggested Flynn was motivated by a desire to end his marriage, avoid losing custody of their two young daughters, and maintain his employment at his wife's family business and his church position.
During the trial, Botner shared text messages exchanged with Flynn over an 18-month period, revealing discussions about his desire to leave his wife. Some messages, sent in the months leading up to Ashley's death, showed Flynn contemplating drastic actions and expressing a desire to be with Botner. One message from September 2025 indicated Flynn was willing to risk numerous aspects of his life, including his daughters and job, to be with his mistress.
Botner testified that Flynn's infidelity and desire for divorce were evident. She stated that he had told her he only stayed in the marriage for their daughters. By the night before Ashley's death, Botner had researched divorce proceedings and methods for deleting messages, and Flynn sent a final message indicating his intention to be free. Botner expressed shock and suspicion upon learning of Ashley's death, telling the court it seemed too coincidental.
Flynn's defense team argued that investigators were too quick to judgment and that his infidelity did not equate to murder. His attorney pointed out that no gun or evidence of Flynn firing a weapon was found. Flynn had previously appeared on American Idol in 2013, with his wife reportedly encouraging him to pursue his dream.
Flynn's bond was revoked, and he was taken into custody. The murder occurred while the couple's two daughters, then aged nine and 11, were reportedly in the house. Prosecutors had filed a motion to dismiss two misdemeanor counts of intimidation of an attorney, victim, or witness.
