Former American Idol Contestant Convicted of Murdering Wife
Caleb Flynn, a pastor from Ohio who previously appeared on American Idol, has been found guilty of fatally shooting his wife, Ashley Flynn, and faces life in prison.
A former Ohio music pastor and one-time American Idol contestant, Caleb Flynn, 40, has been convicted of murdering his wife. Flynn was found guilty of aggravated murder, shooting Ashley Flynn twice in the back of the head as she slept in their Tipp City home on February 16. The jury reached its verdict after deliberating for less than three hours.
Flynn was also found guilty of eight other charges, including tampering with evidence. He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. Sentencing is scheduled for October 5.
Prosecutors presented evidence during the eight-day trial, including police body camera footage and data from Flynn's iPhone and Apple Watch around the time of the murder. Testimony included that of Alleigha Botner, a former mistress who was an intern at Flynn's church. The prosecution revealed that Flynn and Botner exchanged over 100,000 text messages, some of which were read in court. In messages sent in August 2025, Flynn wrote, "I was up until 4am last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail," and "I just want her dead and gone." Botner testified that she now hates Flynn, believing he murdered his wife.
During closing arguments, Miami County Prosecuting Attorney Paul Watkins emphasized Flynn's text messages as proof of his "hatred" for his wife. Watkins recounted that Flynn initially told police he heard gunfire while in his daughters' bedroom and found his wife dead, claiming burglars had entered through an open garage door. However, Flynn later contradicted this statement to investigators, admitting he had not been to the garage.
The defense, led by Patrick Mulligan, argued that there was no concrete evidence, stating, "Connecting a couple of meaningless dots doesn't solve the case." Mulligan contended that evidence of infidelity did not equate to evidence of murder and questioned the tampering with evidence charge, given that the murder weapon was not recovered. Flynn's handgun, which had been stored in his truck's console, remained missing after investigators arrived at the scene.
Botner testified for two days about her 18-month relationship with Flynn. An AI-generated song Flynn allegedly wrote for Botner was also presented, with video footage of the jury's reaction, appearing to include laughter, subsequently going viral. Joseph Wilhelm, a special agent with Ohio's Bureau of Criminal Investigations, testified that multiple apps, including Instagram and an AI-music generating app related to Flynn's relationship with Botner, were uninstalled from Flynn's phone before his wife's death.
Caleb Flynn appeared on the 12th series of American Idol in 2013, receiving a "golden ticket" to advance to Hollywood during televised auditions, though he did not reach the main competition. In a video from the show, he said, "Music is all I know, it's what I live to do and I love to sing, so that's why I auditioned. Maybe my wife kinda nudged me a little, too."
