Former "American Idol" Contestant Accused of Murdering Wife, Texts to Mistress Revealed

Caleb Flynn, a former contestant on "American Idol," is facing murder charges in the fatal shooting of his wife, Ashley Flynn, at their Tipp City, Ohio, home in February. The trial began Friday with prosecutors presenting over 100,000 text messages Flynn allegedly sent to a mistress.

Prosecutors claim these messages reveal Flynn's intent to harm his wife. Prosecutor Paul M. Watkins stated that Flynn, a father of two, had been involved in a "yearslong" affair and, in one message, wrote, "If I could literally kill her and not go to hell I would do it in a heartbeat. That is how dark and hateful I feel."

Another message, according to Watkins, stated, "I was up until 4 AM last night crying. Literally crying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail." These messages were reportedly sent months apart.

Flynn's defense team has acknowledged the affair but argued that the prosecution's case relies on a theory that cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Defense attorney Emily Smith stated that the text messages would also show Flynn discussing divorce plans with his mistress.

During the trial, Flynn became emotional as a 911 call he made to police was played. In the recording, he told a dispatcher, "Somebody broke into my home – somebody broke into my home and shot my wife." He described the scene, saying, "My wife, she’s got two shots to her head. There’s blood everywhere."

Ashley Flynn was found deceased in the home on February 16. Caleb Flynn initially told law enforcement that a burglary had occurred. Authorities later arrested him, alleging he staged the crime scene to mislead investigators.

He faces charges including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence, to all of which he has pleaded not guilty. Court documents allege that Caleb Flynn used a 9mm handgun to shoot his wife, with their two children reportedly sleeping in nearby rooms.

When officers arrived at the scene, responding to reports of a possible burglary, they found the garage door open. Ashley Flynn was discovered in the master bedroom with gunshot wounds to the head. Bodycam footage showed Flynn appearing distressed, asking an officer if his wife had died and later telling a female relative that their daughters did not yet know.
