Forensics Student Admits Murder in 'Dexter'-Inspired 'Kill Room'

Police have released body-worn video footage capturing the arrest of Benjamin Day, a university forensics student who admitted to murdering Maria Saceanu in a room designed to mimic the US television show Dexter. Day, 20, changed his plea to guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Tuesday, confessing to the murder of the 24-year-old Romanian woman.

The court heard that Day lured Saceanu to a plastic-lined room at an Airbnb in Tividale, West Midlands, where she was subjected to 78 knife wounds. He then left the Airbnb around 12:30 GMT on December 21 and walked a distance before calling emergency services at 12:50, requesting medical assistance.

Footage released by West Midlands Police shows Day bleeding from a hand injury near the junction of Highview Street and Brewery Street in Dudley. When questioned by an officer about the injury, Day falsely claimed he had been bitten by a wild dog or a fox. He also initially lied about being unable to recall where he had parked his car, which was located outside the property where Saceanu's body was discovered.

During his interactions with police, Day stated he had driven to the Dudley area to find a "random girl" in a bar. He was later arrested at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley at 03:42, wearing a khaki top similar to those worn by the character Dexter.

Det Insp Matt Marston, who led the investigation, described Day as having an obsessive personality fixated on the Dexter character. "He planned this murder in meticulous detail. It was a pre-planned brutal attack on a defenceless woman lured to the room he had rented," Marston stated. "Day had flagged down officers where he offered them a fabricated story about the reason why he had received an injury to his hand. Officers were suspicious and he was quickly detained."

Day, of Yeadon Close, Redditch, Worcestershire, has been remanded in custody. He faces a mandatory life sentence, with sentencing scheduled for December 4. The details of the case deeply affected investigating officers, and their thoughts remain with Maria Saceanu's family.
