Ford Motor Co. is recalling more than half a million Bronco and Bronco Raptor vehicles due to an engine fire risk stemming from a faulty wiring harness. The recall, identified by Ford as 26S55 and by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as campaign 26V468, affects 565,691 vehicles from model years 2021 through 2026.
The automaker estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect. According to Ford, the wiring harness in the engine compartment lacks sufficient protection, which can lead to exposed wires and subsequent short circuiting. Drivers experiencing this issue may notice smoke emanating from the air vents or receive a dashboard warning message, potentially followed by flames originating from the passenger side of the engine compartment.
Ford has stated that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to this specific defect. To address the problem, dealerships will provide complimentary repairs by installing new protective covers over the wiring harness.
Owners of the affected vehicles can determine if their Bronco is included in the recall by checking their vehicle identification numbers on NHTSA.gov.
