Footballer's Return Sparks Town Division Amid Domestic Violence Backlash

A controversial player signing has fractured a small country town, drawing national attention and igniting a debate about rehabilitation and domestic violence.

Brodie A'Vard, who was convicted of violently attacking his former partner in 2022, has been welcomed back to his boyhood club, the Jerilderie Football Netball Club. The decision has divided the community, with some residents supporting A'Vard's return and others expressing outrage.

After news of A'Vard's appointment emerged, several women and girls reportedly contacted the club with their concerns. According to reports, their accounts were blocked and comments deleted. His fiancée, Kaitlin Link, has spoken out in his defense, stating that A'Vard has begun a new chapter in his life.

"Silencing us won't make this go away," Link stated, indicating a desire for open discussion about the issues surrounding the situation. She added that she and A'Vard were being unfairly targeted.

The incident that led to A'Vard's conviction involved an assault on his former partner, Raychel Lewis, in February 2022. Lewis was hospitalised after being headbutted and hitting her head on the ground. Images from the aftermath show Ms. Lewis's dress and highlight the severity of the attack.

Following the club's announcement of his signing, A'Vard expressed his feelings about returning to the club, stating, "It's great to be back home where it all started."

The controversy highlights the complex dynamics within small communities when addressing past offenses and the desire for second chances versus the need to acknowledge and condemn violence.
