Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has stated that a points deduction is the most probable punishment for Manchester City after the club was found guilty of a significant majority of the 115 charges related to financial irregularities brought against them by the Premier League. The potential sanctions also include fines, title stripping, and expulsion from the league, according to the Premier League handbook.
Maguire, speaking on TalkTV, indicated that a points deduction has precedent, citing cases involving Nottingham Forest and Everton for breaches of financial limit rules. He noted that while titles could be retroactively removed, this would not negate the fan experience of winning them. If titles were stripped, clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool could potentially benefit.
Former Manchester United players, including David De Gea and Rio Ferdinand, have publicly speculated on the possibility of being awarded additional titles. De Gea, who played for United from 2011 to 2023, questioned how many Premier League titles he would have won if City were stripped of theirs, referencing United's second-place finishes during his tenure.
The situation has drawn comparisons to the 2006 Juventus scandal, where the Italian club faced relegation, a 30-point deduction, and the stripping of two league titles for sporting fraud. Maguire also pointed to the financial compensation Everton were ordered to pay Burnley after being found guilty of breaches in the 2021-22 season, suggesting that clubs who have missed out on titles or European qualification due to such breaches could seek financial compensation.
