Food Bank Volunteer's No-Nonsense Demeanor Goes Viral During Royal Visit
A volunteer's direct approach to instructing Meghan Markle on packing food donations captured attention on social media.
A volunteer at a Nottingham food bank has gained viral attention for her straightforward interaction with Meghan Markle during a recent visit by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The couple visited the food poverty action group Himmah in Nottingham as part of a series of engagements in the East Midlands, marking their first joint appearance in the UK since their return. During the visit, Meghan participated in packing donation bags.
A video clip circulating on social media shows the volunteer demonstrating how to fill a bag with food items. She informed Meghan that the task was "not very difficult" and handed her a bag. When Meghan appeared to question the process, asking if she should move to another station, the volunteer firmly instructed her to take the bag and follow along.
This interaction led to commentary on social media platforms like X, with some users describing Meghan's questioning as "performative" and basic, while others characterized the volunteer's response as no-nonsense.
During their time at Himmah, Prince Harry and Meghan also reunited with a group of women known as the "Grenfell ladies." These women had previously cooked for families affected by the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, an event that resulted in 72 fatalities. The Sussexes shared emotional moments with the women, including hugs and hand-holding.
The visit also highlighted the presence of Beth Herlihy, a former Kensington Palace aide and co-founder of the PR boutique Herlihy Loughran, who accompanied the couple. Herlihy, who now works with the Sussexes through her advisory firm, was seen assisting with flowers and balloons handed to the couple by the public. Her firm reportedly provides strategic advisory services to the Duke and Duchess, with payments detailed in their charity's tax filings.
Herlihy's career path includes a period as a soap opera actress before transitioning into public relations and working with the Royal Family. She was previously employed at the Royal Foundation and later with Harry and Meghan before they relocated to the United States. Herlihy Loughran was established in 2020, and she has continued to work with the Sussexes, including accompanying them to the Invictus Games in Germany in September 2023.
