Folarin Balogun has stated that the controversy surrounding the suspension of his red card ahead of the United States Men's National Team's (USMNT) World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium created significant external distractions and unease within the squad.

The decision by FIFA to lift Balogun's red card suspension, which came just a day before the crucial game, added to an already contentious situation, as many argued the initial red card should not have been issued. Despite the appeal and strong reactions from Belgium, Balogun was made eligible to play.

"My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy, and I could almost see within my teammates a bit of nerves, because it is something that is so unique," Balogun told CBS. "The closer we got to the game, I tried to just focus as best as I could, but it was difficult. A lot of outside noise and that’s hard to avoid."

Balogun described the situation as "confusing" for the team, noting that they had been practicing without him initially. The team learned of his availability on the bus to practice, leading to widespread excitement. However, this emotional shift may have impacted the team's focus for the subsequent match.

"It's more just being able to separate the emotion from the job at hand. We're all professionals, so it's not something I think was too difficult to be able to separate once we got over the initial announcement. You saw it was a difficult game against Belgium and that can kind of overshadow whether we were focused or not. From me being inside the camp and inside the setup, I know we had full concentration going into the game," he said.

Despite Balogun's presence, the USMNT suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium. The outcome of the match has led to discussions about whether the internal turmoil surrounding Balogun's status contributed to the loss.

Former President Donald Trump confirmed he had contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the red card. Trump stated he believed the initial call was not a foul and that preventing a key player from participating would have been a significant detriment to the game. He characterized his involvement as asking for a review, not dictating a decision, and expressed that the committee made the correct choice.

Belgium was later eliminated in the quarterfinals by Spain. The controversy surrounding Balogun's suspension has highlighted the intersection of sports and external influences in high-stakes international competitions.
