Flynn Challenges UK Prime Minister on Independence Referendum

Stephen Flynn, the SNP's leader in the House of Commons, has challenged the UK Prime Minister to 'bring it on' over the issue of an independence referendum. Speaking at his party's conference, Flynn stated that supporters of Scottish independence are "winning the argument" and urged the prime minister to allow a vote.

Flynn emphasized that achieving independence requires a sustained effort of persuasion, stating, "One by one, we must persuade our families, our friends, our neighbours, of our cause. One by one, step by step." He described the path forward as one that demands "effort, it takes patient persuasion, it takes hard graft." He expressed confidence that this approach is working and that the period ahead represents the greatest challenge the movement has faced. "With the weight of Scottish public opinion moving to our cause, we will see that final lap through together – for Scotland," he added.

The Scottish government's push for a second independence referendum has faced significant legal hurdles. The UK Supreme Court has previously ruled that the Scottish Parliament does not have the authority to legislate for a referendum without the consent of Westminster.

SNP leader John Swinney is expected to outline a renewed strategy for independence in his keynote speech, aiming to hold a second referendum by 2031. However, the legal constraints remain a primary obstacle to this goal.
