Terrified passengers aboard a FlyDubai flight bound for Israel were filmed screaming and cowering as the plane plunged 18,000 feet in what authorities are investigating as a suspected jihadist terrorist attack. The incident occurred on Wednesday as the Boeing 737 Max was en route to Tel Aviv.
Video footage captured the alarming descent, showing passengers clutching their seats and bracing for impact. Some passengers were seen attempting to reach the cockpit amidst the commotion. The flight was ultimately diverted and made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia due to the efforts of off-duty pilots.
According to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, the co-pilot, believed to be an Omani national who had worked for the airline for a short period, stabbed the pilot and intended to crash the plane. Katz stated that the attack was thwarted by the bravery of several Israeli passengers who intervened, overpowering the co-pilot and allowing another flight crew member to regain control of the aircraft.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the co-pilot had been apprehended and was being questioned in Saudi Arabia. Passengers reportedly erupted in applause and relief upon the plane's safe landing.
Efforts are underway to facilitate the return of the stranded Israeli passengers to their home country.
