A seaside community in Llanelli is grappling with a significant fly infestation, leading to disruptions for residents and businesses.
The issue has prompted some locals to keep their doors and windows shut, even during warm weather, to prevent flies from entering their homes and establishments. "We've got to keep our doors closed, the fly nets are up so it doesn't look like we're open most of the time which is a bit of an issue," said one business owner.
Frustration is mounting among those affected, with claims that local authorities are not adequately addressing the problem. "The council know but they never address it," stated Garry, a local business owner. "They knew it was happening last year and then all of the rest of the year, when it was cool, they didn't do anything and now the flies are back."
Some residents have suggested that the town's drains, which they believe are not being cleaned as frequently as in the past, could be the source of the flies. However, Carmarthenshire council has stated that there is no evidence to support this theory and that its highway drain cleaning program is proceeding as scheduled.
Carmarthenshire council has acknowledged the concerns and stated that it and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) are investigating the issue as a priority. Councillor Aled Vaughan Owen of Carmarthenshire council said, "We understand the concerns raised by residents and businesses in parts of Llanelli regarding increased fly activity and appreciate the frustration this is causing."
The council is encouraging anyone experiencing issues with increased fly activity to report it, as this information aids officers in monitoring the situation and targeting investigation efforts. "Investigations remain ongoing and it is important that any conclusions are evidence-based. However, residents can be reassured that significant officer time and resources are being devoted to this issue," the council added.
Businesses, particularly those in the food service industry, are finding the situation challenging. The constant presence of flies can impact hygiene standards and customer experience. Local establishments are struggling to maintain normal operations under the persistent swarm.
Residents are seeking a swift resolution to what they describe as a "biblical" problem that is affecting their daily lives and the local economy. The ongoing investigation aims to identify the source and implement effective control measures.
