Jessica Beniquez, a 30-year-old from Tampa, Florida, has lost 170 pounds without resorting to weight-loss drugs or surgery, attributing her transformation to a significant lifestyle overhaul that replaced sedentary habits with exercise and a healthier diet. At her heaviest, Beniquez weighed 320 pounds, a weight she said made basic activities difficult and left her constantly tired and in pain.
Beniquez described her previous lifestyle as an addiction to binge-watching television shows, which led to a significant weight gain. For two months, she spent her free time watching series like "Gossip Girl" and "One Tree Hill," gaining 20 pounds in that period alone. This sedentary habit, coupled with a diet of pasta, chicken nuggets, and French fries, contributed to her reaching 320 pounds. She noted that she had always been overweight and had unhealthy eating habits, avoiding vegetables and favoring high-carbohydrate foods.
"I was really just sick and tired of feeling how I felt," Beniquez stated, adding that she struggled with simple tasks like climbing stairs and experienced constant fatigue. She also expressed a desire for increased confidence and the ability to shop for clothes her own age, as the teen section had become too small.
The turning point came after finishing her TV binges. Beniquez decided to make a change, beginning by cutting out soda and fast food. She joined the health and wellness company Herbalife, which assisted her in meal planning and identifying nutritious foods. She implemented a calorie deficit, focused on consuming smaller portions, and shifted her diet to include more vegetables and protein. "I cut out fast food, soda, all the things I was used to. I completely changed my diet," she said. "I went cold turkey."
Her exercise regimen began with daily walks. Within a month, she obtained a gym membership and started incorporating weight lifting and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts, initially with the guidance of a trainer for about three months. She continued to learn and adapt her routine independently. Beniquez acknowledged that the initial changes were challenging, particularly resisting temptations of familiar foods and managing fatigue after long days at work combined with gym sessions. However, her strong desire for improved health and well-being motivated her to persevere through plateaus and slow results.
Beniquez, who has since become cancer-free after a 2018 diagnosis of stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma, now shares her journey on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok under the username @GetFitWJessica. She has amassed a significant following and offers one-on-one coaching for weight loss. She advises others that "motivation isn't always going to be there. Learn discipline."
