Florida Woman Convicted of Killing Boyfriend in Deliberate Car Crash
Leigha Mumby found guilty of vehicular homicide, faces up to 30 years in prison.
A Florida woman has been convicted of vehicular homicide and reckless driving after deliberately crashing her car into a tree, killing her boyfriend.
Leigha Mumby, 25, was found guilty by a Flagler County jury on Wednesday, eight months after the crash that resulted in the death of 22-year-old Daniel Waterman. The jury deliberated for just one hour.
Waterman's family has drawn parallels between this case and that of Mackenzie Shirilla, who was convicted of intentionally crashing her car into a brick wall, killing her boyfriend and his friend. Shirilla was jailed for the crime.
Mumby was pregnant at the time of the incident on February 9 of last year and is now a mother. She faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for the vehicular homicide charge and up to five years for reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, according to Florida law.
Initially, Waterman's family believed the crash was an accident. However, their nephew, who was partially paralyzed from the incident, was able to communicate that he and Mumby had been arguing before the crash. He reportedly told his family and a police officer that Mumby had said, "I don't care what happens, you'll get what you deserve" before accelerating the vehicle to 93 mph. Mumby sobbed in court as the verdict was delivered.
