A dispute over a parking spot in North Lauderdale, Florida, escalated to fatal violence on Wednesday, resulting in the death of a 62-year-old military veteran. The woman involved in the altercation, whose identity has not been released, claims she acted in self-defense.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of a Walmart. Surveillance footage captured the moment the woman exited her vehicle and engaged in a verbal argument with the victim, Bart Diguglielmo. According to a bystander, Diguglielmo had initially blocked the woman's parking space but moved his vehicle to allow her to park. Following this, the woman reportedly approached Diguglielmo's car.
As Diguglielmo exited his vehicle and approached the woman, the argument continued. The footage shows the woman drawing a weapon and pointing it at Diguglielmo, telling him to "walk away." Diguglielmo continued to approach her before briefly walking away and then turning back. At this point, the woman, who appeared to be on the phone, opened fire, striking Diguglielmo.
Diguglielmo fell to the ground, and the exchange continued as he lay there, alternating between sitting up and lying down. Law enforcement from the Broward County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene and arrested the woman. Diguglielmo was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Diguglielmo, a decorated military veteran who served in Desert Storm, worked as a nurse for 30 years before retiring. His sister described the incident as "heartbreaking" and stated that her brother was a good person who would not hurt anyone. His daughter, Amanda Marie, expressed her grief and reflected on wishing for a closer father-daughter relationship.
The shooter has been cooperating with detectives and maintained that she acted in self-defense. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and it remains unclear if she will face charges. The Broward County Sheriff's Office has been contacted for comment.
