Florida Woman Accused of Setting Man on Fire After Argument
Police arrested a woman who allegedly doused a man in accelerant and set him ablaze following a dispute, leaving him with severe burns.
A Florida woman has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and arson after allegedly setting a man on fire following an argument, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred Saturday evening.
Authorities responded to a call around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Northwest 63rd Street and Northwest 25th Avenue, where they found Nathaniel Devon Mathis, 33, unconscious and severely burned. Mathis was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where medical staff determined he had sustained second- and third-degree burns over 80% of his body. He is reported to be in critical condition and not expected to survive.
According to a police report, Tanisha Shelton, 45, had been in a heated dispute with Mathis hours before the alleged attack. Shelton reportedly left the scene after threatening to return with someone to assault Mathis. She reappeared later that evening carrying a bucket containing an accelerant in a plastic bag.
Witnesses told police that Shelton asked another individual for a lighter before dousing Mathis with the accelerant and setting him on fire. One witness used pepper spray on Shelton as she attempted to flee the scene. Information provided by other witnesses helped law enforcement locate and apprehend Shelton.
Shelton is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Her attorney information was not immediately available.
