Florida School Bus Crash Kills Student, Injures Several Others
A multi-vehicle collision in Polk County involved a school bus carrying 37 students.
Two people died, including a Winter Haven High School student, and several others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash involving a school bus in Polk County, Florida, on Monday morning. The crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. when a white Chevy Malibu reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the rear wheels of the school bus, dislodging a tire.
The school bus then veered into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a silver Jeep. The tenth-grade student, who has not been identified, was killed in the crash. The second fatality was an occupant of the Jeep.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd stated during a news conference that the bus was carrying 37 students, the driver, and the driver's 9-year-old daughter. Between five and seven individuals were transported to local hospitals with trauma alerts, with one person in critical condition. Transport to hospitals was facilitated by helicopters, ambulances, and private vehicles.
The driver of the Chevy Malibu is cooperating with investigators and has not been arrested. Authorities indicated the individual was on their way to work at the time of the incident.
