A Sam's Club receipt checker in Sunrise, Florida, has been arrested on accusations of facilitating the theft of approximately $58,000 worth of merchandise over several months. Brenda Jacqueline Archer, 57, allegedly rubber-stamped receipts for a man, identified as Troy Sidney Lawrence, 36, who would then exit the store with unpaid high-ticket items after purchasing low-cost goods.
Lawrence reportedly made off with unpaid merchandise on 46 separate occasions while Archer was stationed at the exit, according to arrest records cited by NBC Miami. Store officials initiated an internal investigation earlier this month after discovering the disappearance of televisions and other expensive items. A review of six months of surveillance video uncovered the alleged recurring scheme.
Investigators allege that Archer, whose job included verifying receipts against purchased items, failed to perform proper checks. For instance, on June 8, Lawrence allegedly purchased a TV wall mount but exited the store with two Samsung televisions, as indicated by surveillance footage and purchase records. The total value of the merchandise stolen in this alleged operation is estimated at $58,000.
Archer and Lawrence were arrested on Tuesday. It remains unclear if either individual has legal representation.
