Florida Rises in Billionaire Ranks as California Dominates Wealthiest List

Florida is experiencing a surge in its billionaire population, closing in on New York's position as the second-wealthiest state, according to a recent Forbes ranking. California continues to lead the nation with the highest number of billionaires.

California boasts 255 billionaires, an increase of 76 since 2022, solidifying its status as the premier state for extreme wealth. Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook, is identified as California's wealthiest resident for the third consecutive year, with an estimated net worth of $246 billion.

Florida has seen a significant increase, now counting 138 billionaires, 47 more than in 2022. This growth places the state just 15 billionaires shy of surpassing New York, which has 153 billionaires but added only 24 in the last five years.

The appeal of Florida for high-net-worth individuals is attributed to its warm climate and a favorable tax environment. The state has no individual income tax, estate tax, inheritance tax, or long-term capital gains tax, factors that are increasingly attracting wealthy individuals away from states with higher tax burdens.

Luxury real estate experts note that areas like Palm Beach County are transforming from retirement destinations into hubs for business creation, drawing numerous CEOs and company leaders. This trend aligns with broader analyses indicating that wealthy millennials are migrating from coastal blue states to Southern red states.

Texas ranks fourth in the nation with 88 billionaires, adding 19 since 2022. The wealthiest individual in Texas, and indeed the world, is Elon Musk, with an estimated fortune of $925 billion.

New York's wealthiest resident is former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, with an estimated $94.9 billion. Despite its high cost of living, including soaring rents and taxes, New York remains a significant center for wealth.

Florida's richest resident is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, whose fortune is estimated at $381 billion.
