Primary elections in Florida on Tuesday will feature a high-profile contest in the state's 25th Congressional District, where Oliver Larkin, a candidate endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is challenging incumbent Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz.
This race is drawing national attention as it embodies the ongoing debate within the Democratic Party between its progressive and centrist wings. Larkin, a 33-year-old veteran of Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign, is the only DSA-endorsed House candidate running in a crucial swing district. He has expressed views critical of the U.S. Senate, calling it an "undemocratic institution," and has referred to Israel's ruling coalition as a "religious supremacist regime."
Moskowitz, a two-term congressman and former Florida emergency management director, is a vocal supporter of Israel and advocates for robust U.S. military and security assistance. He has secured backing from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and AIPAC, a major pro-Israel political group. Larkin, meanwhile, has garnered support from figures on the far-left, including political streamer Hasan Piker.
The newly redrawn 25th Congressional District, anchored in Broward County, is considered a swing seat and could play a role in determining control of the House of Representatives. Moskowitz is running for re-election in this district that has leaned Republican in recent years.
Beyond the 25th District, other significant races are taking place. Longtime Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is facing a challenge in the newly drawn 20th District from Elijah Manley, who is backed by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. Wasserman Schultz, a former chair of the Democratic National Committee, has faced criticism regarding her candidacy in a majority-minority district that has historically been represented by Black lawmakers.
In the race to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, Republican Rep. Byron Donalds has received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. The Republican field also includes Lt. Gov. Jay Collins and former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner.
Florida's Senate primary is also set to establish the nominees for a crucial general election. The contest to fill the remainder of the term previously held by Marco Rubio, now Secretary of State, will see incumbent Republican Sen. Ashley Moody facing primary challengers. On the Democratic side for this Senate seat, retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman is competing against state Rep. Angie Nixon for the nomination.
Primaries are also occurring in Alaska and Wyoming, with contests for Senate seats and other offices. In Alaska, which is seen as a potential pickup opportunity for Democrats, former Rep. Mary Peltola is a notable candidate. In Wyoming, Rep. Harriet Hageman is running for the Senate with Trump's backing.
The outcomes of these primaries are expected to shape key general election matchups and contribute to the broader national political landscape.
