Florida Man Won't Face Charges in Shooting of Teen Looking for Lost Phone

A Florida man will not face criminal charges for fatally shooting a 15-year-old boy who was in his backyard searching for a lost phone. The State Attorney's Office announced its decision to decline prosecution, citing the state's Stand Your Ground self-defense law.

The shooting occurred on September 20 in Tampa. The victim, identified by his family as Heitor Amaral, was with two friends when they entered a gated community called The Club at Hidden Rivers.

According to police reports and statements from Amaral's friends, Amaral had lost his phone the previous night at a teen club. His friend, Julio Gonzalez, used a tracking app to locate the phone, which pinged at a residence within the gated community. Despite his mother's suggestion to wait, Amaral and his friends entered the community through an open gate, fearing the phone's battery would die and they would lose its location.

After knocking on the front door and receiving no answer, the teenagers proceeded to the backyard of the home. Police stated they began knocking on the sliding glass door. The homeowner, described as being in his mid-20s, armed himself with a gun and put on a mask, intending to scare off the individuals he saw on his back patio attempting to access his sliding glass door.

While Amaral's friends fled, a physical altercation ensued between Amaral and the homeowner. The homeowner reported that Amaral placed him in a headlock, leading him to fear for his life. A gunshot was then heard, striking Amaral, who was pronounced critically injured and died shortly after.

Friends of Amaral reported that the homeowner appeared to be agitated and ready to use his weapon. Amaral's sister described her brother as small and unlikely to initiate a physical confrontation, suggesting he likely acted in self-defense if involved in a fight.

Authorities did not recover the lost phone from the property. The State Attorney's Office acknowledged the profound pain the tragedy has caused the families and community. The family of Heitor Amaral has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses.
