A Florida boater has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his drinking companion, Melvin Jimenez. Kamal Padlowski, 52, was handed the lifetime sentence on Monday in Hillsborough County Court in Tampa, Florida, for the 2024 Memorial Day Weekend killing of Jimenez, 47.
Padlowski was found guilty of premeditated first-degree murder in July. The incident occurred on May 25, 2024, at the Little Harbor Marina in Ruskin, Florida. According to court documents, Jimenez died after being shoved during a drunken fight with Padlowski. The shove caused Jimenez to fall backward, striking his head on a fiberglass dock before Padlowski pushed his body into the water.
The altercation was captured on video, showing Padlowski punching Jimenez and grabbing his throat before pushing him onto the dock. Padlowski was then seen dragging Jimenez by the ankles and throwing him into the water. Instead of rendering aid, Padlowski armed himself with two kitchen knives until law enforcement arrived.
Padlowski and Jimenez had met earlier on the day of the incident at the Sunset Bar and Grill before Jimenez was invited back to Padlowski's sailboat. The two continued drinking on the vessel with Padlowski's fiancée before the fight erupted. Jimenez's blood alcohol level was measured at .26, more than three times the legal limit. Padlowski claimed he had consumed a smaller amount of alcohol and stated that Jimenez had become aggressive, threatened to kill him, and threatened to rape his fiancée.
Prosecutors argued that Padlowski was not facing an imminent threat, negating a self-defense claim. During the sentencing, Judge Michelle Sisco described Padlowski's actions as lacking sympathy for another human being. Padlowski's attorney indicated an intention to appeal the verdict, arguing that Jimenez died instantly from the fall, not from being pushed into the water, and that Padlowski should have been found guilty of manslaughter if the death was solely due to the fall.
Jimenez's stepdaughter delivered an emotional impact statement during the sentencing, describing Jimenez as a trusted protector and a safe space in her life.
