Florida Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Facebook Marketplace Murder

Joseph Michael Lynch, 47, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of Kenny Dale Ashby, 33, during a Facebook Marketplace car sale. Lynch pleaded no contest on Thursday to second-degree murder and burglary with assault or battery.

The incident occurred on July 3 at Ashby's home in Springfield, Florida, near Panama City. Ashby was attempting to sell a 2002 Dodge Neon through Facebook Marketplace when Lynch arrived as the potential buyer.

An argument erupted between Lynch and Ashby concerning the vehicle's missing title. As Ashby went inside to search for the title, Lynch grew impatient and allegedly kicked down the home's door. Inside, Lynch repeatedly stabbed Ashby with a knife. The attack occurred in the presence of Ashby's wife, his five-year-old daughter, and three other guests.

After the stabbing, Lynch took the cell phones of those present before fleeing the scene. According to an affidavit, Ashby's wife informed Lynch about the child's presence, which led him to drop the phones again. She then called 911.

Police responded to the scene and found Ashby with multiple stab wounds. He was transported to a hospital, where he died in the early hours of July 4. Officers located Lynch nearby, where he admitted to the crime.

Circuit Court Judge Brantley Clark handed down the 40-year sentence. Prosecutor Peter Overstreet noted that the family agreed with the plea and the sentence, describing it as a "life sentence for this defendant."

In a statement read in court, Ashby's wife, Ashlee, described the profound impact of the loss. "He was not just taken from us, but violently taken and in front of us, leaving a void that can never rebuild. This loss has shattered his family completely. We have no sense of safety anymore, not even in our own home."

Ashby's mother, Shelby Frix, also shared a statement, calling her son "my child, my hero and a deeply loved member of our family whose life mattered."

Ashby was remembered in his obituary as a person with a large heart who enjoyed activities such as mudding, swimming, and spending time with loved ones. He had a particular passion for large trucks, especially Dodges.
