Florida Man Claims Birthday Excuse for Smashing NYC Taxi During Knicks Celebration

A Florida man has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after smashing the windshield of an occupied New York City taxi during a jubilant celebration of the Knicks' Game 4 NBA Finals comeback. Saul Vargas, 21, of St. Cloud, Florida, admitted that he was attempting to celebrate his 21st birthday when he jumped on the hood and roof of the yellow cab, causing significant damage.

Vargas was caught on video participating in the destruction on June 11, as thousands of Knicks fans flooded the streets near Madison Square Garden following the team's historic comeback victory. He later turned himself in to authorities after learning he was wanted by police.

"I just want to be 21,” Vargas told reporters outside Manhattan Criminal Court, according to the Daily Mail. “At the end of the day, I’m 21. I was being a kid, I was being stupid... It was my birthday, I was trying to have fun but that’s not a good excuse.”

Vargas expressed remorse to the taxi driver, Noueddine Bitat, 59, who was driving near the intersection of Seventh Avenue and 36th Street around 12:30 a.m. when the incident occurred. Bitat reported that the crowd pulled him from the cab, grabbed him by the neck, and punched him in the head.

"To the taxi driver, I do apologize. It’s something no driver should have to go through,” Vargas stated.

Bitat, who is from Algeria, suffered a diabetic attack and reported significant trauma from the event, stating he was lucky to be alive and questioning the risks associated with his profession. He indicated that he might not return to driving a taxi after the incident.

As part of his plea deal, Vargas was ordered to pay $500 in restitution to Bitat. The Knicks went on to win the NBA Finals in Game 5, securing their first championship in 53 years. The team's dramatic comeback in Game 4, which erased a 29-point deficit, ignited the widespread fan celebrations across the city.
