Florida Gators Eye First College Football Playoff Berth, Potential Home Game

Florida is positioned to make its first appearance in the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket and could host a first-round game, according to the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll released Sunday.

The Gators, under first-year coach Jon Sumrall, surged 13 spots to No. 8 in the rankings. This placement would grant them the final home-field advantage spot and contribute to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) having six teams in the playoff field.

Should these rankings hold, the top four seeds would be Texas, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Miami. Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, and Florida would be the teams hosting first-round games.

The College Football Playoff format dictates that the five highest-ranked conference champions from the Power Four and one from the Group of Six will automatically qualify. The remaining seven spots will be filled by the next highest-ranked teams. Notre Dame would secure an at-large spot if they are ranked among the top 12 teams in the CFP's final rankings.

The Big Ten conference would be represented by two teams, while the Big 12, Atlantic Coast Conference, and Pac-12 would each have one representative. Notre Dame, as an independent, would also be included. Boise State is projected to represent the Pac-12 as the top Group of Six champion.

Based on the current AP rankings, the opening round of the CFP matchups would look like this:

• No. 9 seed Mississippi at No. 8 Florida. The winner would advance to face No. 1 Texas.
• No. 12 seed Boise State at Ohio State. The winner would play No. 4 Miami.
• No. 10 seed BYU at No. 7 Alabama. The winner would advance to face No. 2 Georgia.
• No. 11 seed LSU at No. 6 Indiana. The winner would play No. 3 Notre Dame.

The teams currently projected to be just outside the playoff bracket are Texas Tech, Utah, and Iowa. Despite Texas Tech being ranked No. 12 by the AP, Boise State's status as the highest-ranked Group of Six team would push the Red Raiders out.

First-round playoff games are scheduled for December 18 and 19. The quarterfinals will take place on December 30 and January 1, followed by the semifinals on January 14 and 15. The championship game is slated for January 25 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The AP will continue to publish brackets based on the weekly Top 25 rankings until the CFP selection committee reveals its initial rankings on November 3.
