A Florida man's outing with friends took a harrowing turn when he was attacked by a shark while exploring a sandbar, resulting in a severe leg injury and substantial blood loss.
David Daniel, 43, was on a boat near Boca Grande Key when he and his companions decided to investigate a nearby sandbar. Shortly after entering the water, a shark approached Daniel. As he attempted to move his leg away, the animal bit him, causing a significant injury.
"I’m just staring it down the barrel, like, all right, is this really happening?" Daniel recounted the encounter. The shark severed a portion of his leg, leading to an estimated loss of six liters of blood.
Witnesses Courtney McMurray and Chris Green, both nurses, were in the vicinity and heard Daniel's distress. They provided immediate first aid on the beach, helping to control the bleeding and elevate the limb while awaiting further assistance. Green stated, "We did our jobs as nurses to help control the bleeding and get the limb elevated, and we hollered for somebody to call the Coast Guard."
Daniel was subsequently airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center, where he underwent two emergency surgeries. Doctors were able to preserve his foot, but he faces an extended recovery period. He is expected to be unable to walk for six to eight weeks and will require extensive physical therapy.
Adding to the physical and emotional toll, Daniel is currently without health insurance, creating a significant financial burden. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to cover his medical expenses, physical therapy, and living costs during his recovery. The fundraiser has reportedly gathered around $10,000.
