A 71-year-old fisherman was killed by a 12-foot alligator on Friday while posing for a photograph with his catch on the banks of Lake Apopka in Dr. Phillips Memorial Park, near Orlando, Florida. The victim, identified as Steven Hamilton of Winter Gardens, was reportedly holding up a bass for a picture when the alligator lunged, dragging him into the water, according to witness Beatrice Soto.

Emergency responders recovered Hamilton's body after a lengthy process due to the presence of multiple alligators in the water. The alligator responsible for the attack was captured by trappers, dragged ashore, and subsequently euthanized. Florida Fish and Wildlife officials confirmed the alligator was decapitated and its head taken as evidence.

Locals described Hamilton as a regular at the park, often fishing there nightly. Connor Kelley told WESH2 that Hamilton was a "very kind man. Very relatable." Another fisherman, Jason Handley, expressed his distress upon hearing that a regular angler had been attacked, later confirming it was Hamilton.

Hamilton was also known in the Orlando area as a veteran musician, having played with local bands, including the Bone Bros Band, for nearly four decades. Christine Pompilio, who knew Hamilton through the music scene, told WFTV9 that he was "very, very talented, played different instruments, and would share all that knowledge with everybody that came along and joined in."

This incident occurs less than four months after another fatal alligator attack in the region. In June, 31-year-old Brittany Clark was killed by a 12-foot alligator in the Little Big Econ State Forest while wading in a river with friends. Her boyfriend reportedly attempted to fight off the alligator during the attack.

Florida Fish and Wildlife officials note that alligator attacks on humans are rare, but the animals can be more territorial during their mating season, which typically runs from April through June. Alligators use a technique called a "death roll" to subdue prey, violently twisting to pull victims underwater. The medical examiner's report on Clark's death detailed how her boyfriend attempted to pry her from the alligator's jaws. In Hamilton's case, witnesses reported the alligator grabbed him by the leg and pulled him into the water.
