Florida County Declares Dengue Emergency Amid Rising Cases

Hillsborough County, Florida, has declared a state of emergency due to a surge in dengue cases. As of late September, the state has reported approximately 485 cases this year, with one fatality, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral illness that can cause severe flu-like symptoms. While seasonal outbreaks are common in Florida, often linked to travelers, experts note a concerning rise in locally acquired cases this year.

Understanding Dengue

Dengue is caused by viruses transmitted primarily by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The disease is endemic in tropical regions worldwide, affecting an estimated 400 million people annually. Most dengue infections in the U.S. are acquired through travel, but the presence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito in parts of the U.S., particularly South Florida, allows for local transmission. Symptoms, which appear 5-7 days after a mosquito bite, can include fever and severe body aches, lasting up to 10 days. A second dengue infection can be more severe and potentially lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever, a serious condition that can be fatal.

Dengue Transmission and Prevention in the U.S.

Despite the presence of the vector mosquito in the continental U.S., dengue has not yet established a permanent foothold. Factors contributing to this include air-conditioned living spaces, which limit mosquito activity during peak hours, and the mosquitoes' limited range, typically staying within about 100 meters. This means the virus's spread is often dependent on infected individuals traveling.

There is no cure for dengue; treatment focuses on managing symptoms. Public health officials emphasize prevention through avoiding mosquito bites. Recommendations include keeping windows screened, wearing protective clothing outdoors, and using mosquito repellent. Eliminating standing water around homes is also crucial, as mosquitoes can breed in small containers like plastic bags.

While cooler weather typically leads to a decrease in mosquito activity and transmission, officials caution that vigilance is still necessary in warmer regions like Florida. No dengue vaccine is currently available in the U.S.
