Florida Coach Sumrall's Son Declares Loss 'Not Forgivable' in Ruthless Text
13-year-old Sam Sumrall left the stadium early and expressed his disappointment via text after the Gators' unexpected defeat.
Following the Florida Gators' surprising 38-19 home loss to South Carolina, head coach Jon Sumrall revealed the candid reaction of his 13-year-old son, Sam, who expressed his profound disappointment through a text message that the coach deemed potentially unforgivable.
Sumrall, who took over the Gators this season after a successful tenure at Troy and Tulane, shared the anecdote during his weekly 'Gator Talk' show on Monday. He recounted how his son, Sam, left the game early, unable to watch what he perceived as the team getting "their butt kicked."
After addressing his team in the locker room, Sumrall checked his phone and found a text from Sam. "Dad, I don’t know if this is forgivable," Sam wrote, conveying his anger and frustration. The coach responded in jest, noting that Sam himself had done things that might be unforgivable.
The emotional toll of the loss was also felt by Sumrall's young daughter, who was visibly upset during the post-game proceedings. "She is balling," Sumrall described, explaining that his daughter was crying not for herself, but for her father's team. "Dad, I just hate losing for you," she told him.
The Gators' performance against South Carolina marked a significant and unexpected downturn. Just two weeks prior, Florida had dominated then-No. 4 Ole Miss with a 52-28 victory. However, a subsequent blowout loss on the road to Missouri, followed by the home defeat to a 3-2 South Carolina team, left fans and the coaching staff searching for answers. The Gamecocks established an early lead and maintained control through the second half, securing a decisive win in The Swamp.
