A flight attendant has urged passengers to refrain from eating directly off airplane tray tables, revealing that some parents use the surfaces to change their babies' diapers. Janae, a cabin crew member and TikTok content creator, shared her concerns about the unsanitary practice, explaining that such surfaces are often contaminated with fecal matter.

"People change their kids diapers on those tray tables on airplanes, that's why, as a flight attendant, I don't ever eat off of those tray tables, I don't put any of my stuff on those tray tables," Janae stated in a viral video. She cautioned that even thorough cleaning with disinfecting wipes may not be fully effective if the surface is not kept wet for the recommended duration of 10 minutes.

Janae described encountering parents who attempt to hand her soiled diapers after changing their children on the tray tables. "Why do people do this? Why do people change their kids dirty diapers on tray tables where people are going to be putting their stuff and eating? Because they don't think," she commented. Flight attendants typically refuse to take the diapers and instead provide garbage bags for parents to manage their children's waste.

The flight attendant also highlighted other unsanitary behaviors observed on flights, including passengers expecting attendants to handle vomit bags, failure to wash hands after using the lavatory, and walking through the cabin barefoot.

Other flight attendants have echoed concerns about the cleanliness of various airplane surfaces. Reports from other cabin crew members indicate that areas such as window shades, carpets, overhead bins, and safety straps can harbor germs. Shanina Knighton, a research associate professor at Case Western Reserve University's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, has previously advised caution when touching surfaces in airplane lavatories, emphasizing the importance of avoiding illness during travel.
