FKA Twigs Settles Lawsuit Against Shia LaBeouf, NDA Voided
A judge ruled the confidentiality agreement between the singer and actor terminated, allowing Twigs to speak freely about her experiences.
Singer FKA Twigs has settled a lawsuit against her ex-boyfriend Shia LaBeouf, with a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruling that a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) between them is terminated and void. The settlement resolves a dispute initiated after LaBeouf sought payment from Twigs for an alleged breach of their previous settlement agreement when she spoke about their past relationship in an interview.
The court filing stated that the NDA violated California's Stand Together Against Non-Disclosure Act, a 2018 law that prohibits confidentiality clauses in settlements involving sexual assault, sexual harassment, and sex-based discrimination. A sworn declaration from the act's author, Senator Connie M. Leyva, reaffirmed this stance.
Per the settlement, FKA Twigs, whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett, is now free to discuss her experiences and support causes without fear of reprisal. "This victory frees her to discuss her experience, advocate for other women who might be less privileged, and support the charitable causes of her choice," said Mathew Rosengart, Twigs' attorney, who also represented Britney Spears in her conservatorship case.
LaBeouf's lawyer, Shawn Holley, stated that "Shia wishes Twigs nothing but the best in her life and career and, to that end, has agreed to end their long-standing dispute." The settlement emphasizes that it represents a significant win for the principle that women speaking out about sexual abuse should not be silenced by NDAs that conflict with California law.
The case is scheduled for official dismissal at a hearing on December 4 at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse.
Twigs initially filed a lawsuit against LaBeouf in March, alleging he had attempted to control her for nearly a decade. Rosengart explained at the time that the action was a response to LaBeouf's attempt to intimidate Twigs through a "frivolous and unlawful secret arbitration" filed in December, in which he sought to extract money from her.
Twigs and LaBeouf, who met on the set of the film "Honey Boy," dated for approximately nine months between mid-2018 and mid-2019. Following their breakup, Twigs filed a lawsuit in 2020 alleging sexual battery, assault, and emotional distress, claiming LaBeouf knowingly transmitted an STD and subjected her to abuse. LaBeouf denied the allegations but acknowledged in a statement to The New York Times that he has "a history of hurting the people closest to" him and expressed shame for his past behavior.
The 2020 lawsuit was settled out of court on July 23, 2025, with all claims dismissed with prejudice.
This latest legal development follows other recent legal issues for LaBeouf. He was arrested in February on misdemeanor battery charges related to a bar fight during Mardi Gras. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery charges in June and received two years of supervised probation and a six-month suspended jail sentence.
