Five teenagers died in a head-on collision on the M9 motorway in County Kildare, Ireland, early Sunday morning after the car they were in drove the wrong way down the road. Four other individuals, including a child, were seriously injured in the incident and were en route to Dublin Airport when the crash occurred.

According to John Joe O'Connell, vice-president of the Garda Representative Association (GRA), the vehicle carrying the teenagers had failed to stop for gardaí earlier. An instruction was then given not to pursue the car due to it traveling the wrong way on the M9.

"It would be standard practice, and the command and control center would be dictating what happens in a live environment – but the members in the cars have to make a split-second decision," O'Connell told RTÉ's Morning Ireland radio program when asked about the procedure. He added that gardaí are subject to internal sanctions, discipline, and potential criminal offenses if they engage in pursuits that lead to negative outcomes.

O'Connell noted a concerning trend of youth engaging in activities, often documented on social media, where they attempt to "outdo each other" through dangerous driving, including wrong-way travel on motorways. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly echoed these concerns, stating that in some instances, vehicles are driven on the wrong side of motorways for social media attention.

The incident follows a similar event the previous weekend on Dublin's M50 motorway, where nine people were injured in a collision involving a car traveling in the wrong direction.

Authorities are conducting post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death for the five teenagers. A forensic collision examination is also underway to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Officials are urging parents to discuss the severe consequences of such dangerous activities with their children.
