Post-mortem examinations are scheduled for five teenage boys who died in a collision on the M9 motorway in County Kildare. The crash occurred around 3 a.m. on Sunday between junctions 3 and 4. The vehicle carrying the teenagers was traveling southbound on the northbound carriageway when it collided head-on with another car.
Three women, aged in their 20s and 30s, and a child who were in the second vehicle sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital. Gardaí, the Irish police force, have stated that no pursuit was in progress prior to the incident. Forensic investigators have completed their examination of the crash site.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly described the occupants of the second car as "family members" who were "travelling innocently" at the time of the collision. Police are appealing for witnesses who may have been on that section of the motorway around the time of the crash or who have any information relevant to the investigation to come forward.
