A collision on Ireland's M9 motorway on Sunday morning resulted in the deaths of five teenagers and serious injuries to four family members. The incident occurred when a BMW, allegedly stolen and traveling southbound on the northbound carriageway, collided head-on with a Hyundai carrying the family.
The four family members, identified as sisters Alma and Niamh Kinsella, in their 30s, their younger sister Ella Hendricken, in her 20s, and her nephew, were en route to Dublin Airport for a wedding in Britain. They all remain hospitalized with serious injuries; Alma and Niamh are reported to be in critical condition. The family is from the Carlow area.
All five teenagers in the BMW, reportedly aged between 15 and 17, died at the scene. They have been identified on social media as Kamil Pustkowski, Joe Carthy, Jeremy O'Brien, Alex McCarthy, and Jack Kennedy. All five were masked when authorities arrived at the scene.
Investigations are underway to determine if the BMW was stolen and if the teenagers were connected to a burglary and car theft gang operating in Dublin. The vehicle had been observed in areas near Kildare and County Carlow before the crash. Authorities are also examining whether the teenagers were involved in attempted car robberies in the region on the night of the incident.
The Garda Representative Association (GRA) stated that the BMW had failed to stop for gardaí (police) prior to the collision. It is understood that an instruction was given not to pursue the vehicle due to its dangerous direction of travel on the motorway. GRA vice-president John Joe O'Connell noted that such incidents, including wrong-way driving, are sometimes captured for social media engagement.
O'Connell also highlighted the challenges faced by gardaí in pursuit situations, citing the potential for internal sanctions and the risk of vehicles being rammed. He suggested a need to re-evaluate court sentences for such offenses and urged parents to discuss the grave consequences of joyriding with their children.
Post-mortem examinations are scheduled to determine the exact cause of death for the teenagers. Friends and family have shared tributes on social media, mourning the loss of the young individuals and expressing hopes for the recovery of the injured family members.
