Five people died Wednesday afternoon in a head-on collision on the Stuart Highway in Australia's Northern Territory. The crash occurred around 12:50 p.m. approximately 2 kilometers south of the Marrakai Road turn-off near Darwin.
Police investigations indicate that a Ford Ranger, traveling northbound, crossed into the southbound lanes and collided with a Toyota HiAce. The sole occupant of the Toyota, a 69-year-old woman, was killed, as were the four occupants of the Ford Ranger: a 23-year-old male driver, a 36-year-old male passenger, and two women aged 23 and 32.
Both vehicles were engulfed in flames shortly after the impact. Witnesses attempted to assist but were unable to extricate the passengers before the fires became uncontrollable.
NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole stated on Thursday that the force worked through the night to identify the victims and has since notified their families. A formal disaster victim identification process is ongoing.
Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Schumacher described the incident as "incredibly tragic" and noted its devastating impact on multiple families and the community. Witnesses reported that the Ford Ranger was traveling at excessive speed and overtaking dangerously in the moments leading up to the collision.
The section of the Stuart Highway where the crash occurred remains a crime scene. Detours are in place, and motorists are advised of potential delays. The Major Crash Investigation Unit is continuing its investigation into the circumstances of the collision. Police are appealing for information, dashcam footage, or any witnesses who observed the vehicles' movements prior to the crash.
