Wesley Watson, a 42-year-old fitness influencer with a significant YouTube following, has pleaded guilty to aggravated battery for a physical altercation at a Miami gym that resulted in another man suffering a fractured face and a concussion. Watson admitted his role in the incident during a Miami-Dade County courtroom appearance on Thursday.
The confrontation occurred on December 29, 2024, at the Elev8tion Fitness gym. According to reports, Watson was working out when Hakeem Ibrahim approached him. Ibrahim reportedly traveled from New Jersey to confront Watson and began recording the interaction, pushing Watson. Watson then removed his weight belt and struck Ibrahim until a gym employee intervened.
Ibrahim did not report the incident to Miami police until about a month later, explaining that he sought out Watson to understand why he was involved in altercations. Ibrahim alleged that Watson repeatedly hit and kicked him in the face.
Watson's legal team is in negotiations with prosecutors regarding his sentence. Prosecutors are seeking 21 months in prison, followed by seven years of probation. Watson's attorney, Eric Clayman, stated that discussions have considered a psychologist's testimony suggesting Watson abused anabolic steroids and had untreated mental health concerns.
As part of the plea agreement, Watson is required to record a video discussing the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of mental health treatment. Clayman indicated that Watson intends to use his platform to assist others.
Watson, who previously served a nine-year prison sentence for a robbery conviction in California, has about 510,000 subscribers on YouTube, where he is known for motivational fitness content. His YouTube channel has remained active with still images and voice messages.
Watson's attorney acknowledged that Ibrahim sought out Watson due to his online presence, leading to the physical confrontation. Clayman noted that while Watson was capable of using force, the complexity of the case lies in determining when that force should have ceased, attributing Watson's actions to adrenaline.
Watson is currently being held at the Metrowest Detention Center in Miami and is scheduled for sentencing on July 17.
