Fitness influencer Connor Murphy, 32, drowned in a lake in Thailand on Tuesday after jumping into the water while fleeing police during a reportedly frantic episode, according to reports.
Murphy, who amassed 2.4 million YouTube followers by sharing workout tips and vlogs, was living in Bang Phli on a digital nomad visa and had been at his residence for two months. Police were called to his apartment early Tuesday morning after neighbors reported hearing a man screaming. Upon arrival, Murphy allegedly became agitated and refused to allow officers to approach him before jumping into an eight-foot-deep lake.
He reportedly remained in the water for several hours, struggling to stay afloat before disappearing beneath the surface. Divers later recovered his body from the lake. Police Captain Weeraphong Rupsuay described the incident as a 'sudden frantic' meltdown, noting Murphy's apparent religious behavior and mumbling of prayers.
Investigators found piles of trash smeared across the walls and furniture in Murphy's home, as well as two unused syringes in his car. Police Lieutenant Colonel Santirat Ngernman stated that Murphy became agitated upon their arrival and swam in the lake before sinking.
Murphy gained popularity in the mid-2010s. His recent social media activity included a TikTok video posted six days prior to his death, in which he aimed a bow and arrow at a body of water, captioning it 'dragon hunting.' Fans expressed concern in the comments section of his posts. Another video showed him spitting out Mirin, a Japanese rice wine. Murphy frequently posted about 'looksmaxxing,' an online trend focused on improving physical appearance. His last YouTube video was titled 'RIP Elon Muscular,' which he claimed was a satirical acting performance.
The investigation into his death is ongoing.
