The global fitness community is mourning the death of Leroy Saunders, a 41-year-old South African-born fitness coach based in Bangkok, who collapsed and died during a high-intensity endurance competition in Thailand. The incident occurred at the BYD HYROX Bangkok event, held from August 13 to August 16 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

Event staff and medical personnel immediately provided CPR and emergency assistance after Saunders lost consciousness. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. His family and team confirmed his death in a statement on his Instagram account on Tuesday, August 18.

"Until the last second of this moment, Leroy lived his life without regret or hesitation," the statement read, remembering him as a dedicated mentor who had positively impacted many lives. His family has requested that media outlets and HYROX organizers refrain from speculation until full medical details are confirmed, according to the Bangkok Post.

Saunders was a prominent figure in Thailand's fitness industry. He owned IAOT CrossFit in Bangkok and founded Fight by Design, a conditioning program for Muay Thai fighters, boxers, and MMA athletes. He had previously competed in HYROX, finishing the Doubles category last year.

HYROX is a mass-participation fitness race that tests cardiovascular endurance and functional strength. A standard race involves eight 1km runs, each followed by a functional workout station. These stations include activities such as the SkiErg, sled push and pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls. The event format is designed to push competitors' heart rates for an average duration of 60 to 90 minutes. The Bangkok event was expected to attract thousands of athletes and spectators.

Tributes have poured in on social media from fellow trainers, fighters, and gym members, honoring Saunders' passion, work ethic, and dedication to helping others achieve their physical potential. His family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and stated that details regarding a memorial will be shared later.
