First Photos Emerge of Oregon School Shooter John Griffin

First photographs of John J. Griffin II, the 16-year-old accused of a deadly mass shooting at an Oregon elementary school, have been revealed. The images show the gunman glaring at the camera. One photo, posted on Facebook by his mother, Shauntai May Nickerson, on September 10, 2026, shows Griffin with a sullen expression.

Griffin is seen in the photograph wearing an oversized hoodie alongside his mother, with a waterfall in the background. The mother and son had previously appeared in a 2020 article discussing students in the Bend-La Pine School District’s NEST program, a specialized program for students with intensive behavioral and social skills challenges, returning to classrooms after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, Nickerson told NewsChannel10 that her son, then 10, struggled with remote learning.

Griffin allegedly opened fire on Thursday afternoon at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend with a Maverick 88, a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. Law enforcement sources indicated the weapon was allegedly purchased by his mother. The teenager reportedly shot at the school's locked doors to gain entry before proceeding to a special education classroom, where he had previously been a student.

Authorities stated that Griffin was fatally shot by Kaylub Giamanco, identified as a hero dad who was driving home for his lunch break and witnessed Griffin entering the building with a firearm. The attack also resulted in critical injuries to another student, aged 7, and a 54-year-old teacher. The 7-year-old student, who is in a wheelchair, was reportedly shot in the face.
