Firefighters Rescue Owl From Pool Using Pool Skimmer

Firefighters in Ventura, California, recently performed an unusual rescue, using a pool skimmer to save an owl that had become stranded in a backyard swimming pool. The Ventura City Fire Department shared details of the rescue on Facebook, noting that the owl was safely retrieved and returned to the wild.

Video footage released by the department shows the owl perched near the pool after its rescue, appearing unharmed. Firefighters used a pool leaf skimmer to gently guide the bird towards the edge of the pool and then onto dry land. The department expressed relief that the animal was safe, stating, “Glad this little guy is safe and back on his way.”

While the specific species of the owl has not been identified, it is known that several owl species inhabit the Ventura County area. Wildlife experts suggest that owls may be attracted to swimming pools for a variety of reasons. They often hunt prey such as frogs, rodents, and large insects that are drawn to the water's edge. Additionally, the reflective surface of the water can sometimes be mistaken for open ground, leading to accidental falls.

Bright lights around pools can also attract insects and other small creatures, inadvertently creating a hunting ground for nocturnal predators like owls. This particular owl is currently being treated at the Ojai Raptor Center. Officials have not yet provided an update on its condition.

The Ojai Raptor Center advises the public to contact local wildlife rehabilitation centers if they encounter distressed wildlife, as different species require specialized care. They also suggest that providing photos or videos of the animal can assist rehabilitators in assessing its condition remotely.
