Fire Destroys Mississippi Senior Living Facility, Residents Evacuated
Emergency crews responded to a significant fire at Brookdale Clinton on Wednesday evening, with officials confirming the majority of the building was lost.
A fire erupted at the Brookdale Clinton senior living facility in Clinton, Mississippi, on Wednesday evening, prompting the evacuation of its residents. While no injuries were immediately reported, authorities were working to confirm that all residents had been accounted for.
The fire, which consumed the majority of the building, sent flames and smoke into the sky, visible for miles. Images from the scene showed evacuated residents, some in wheelchairs or using walkers, watching as firefighters battled the blaze. The roof of the facility had partially collapsed.
Evacuated residents were being transported to a local church, and Brookdale Senior Living was arranging for their relocation to affiliated properties. Marlee Price-Cook, director of communications for Clinton, described the incident as one of the most significant the city had faced in her four years of service.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves stated that state agencies, including the health department and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, along with multiple fire departments, were assisting in the response and search efforts. "Mississippi is praying for the residents, employees and families affected by the terrible fire at the Brookdale assisted living facility in Clinton. This is truly an awful situation," Reeves said in a statement.
Brookdale Clinton offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care services, according to the company's website. City officials requested that the public avoid the area to allow emergency crews unimpeded access.
