Provo Fire Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and their three sons, Reid, Thayne, and Gage, died Friday after being caught in a flash flood while hiking in a scenic red rock canyon near Bicknell, Utah. The family was reportedly at the Sunglow campground when heavy rains caused the floodwaters to surge through the canyon.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office was alerted to the incident Friday evening when the body of a young man was discovered in the flood wash. The remains of the other four family members were recovered later that day and on Saturday.
Provo Fire and Rescue confirmed the family's deaths on Saturday, expressing devastation and extending condolences. The Provo Firefighters Union noted that their wildland rapid extraction module team had assisted in recovery efforts.
Community members shared memories of Captain Long, recalling his generosity and dedication. Tributes also poured in for Katrina Long, who was a former councilmember in Mona City and co-founder of Summit Medical Spa. City officials and colleagues remembered her for her service, leadership, and commitment to the community.
Summit Medical Spa released a statement highlighting Katrina Long's role as the spa's heart, emphasizing her kindness, grace, and compassion. The spa stated her legacy will continue to be felt.
An online fundraiser has been established to support the couple's surviving daughter, Lydia, who was not on the hike with her family. The fundraiser aims to help ease the burdens she faces following the loss of her parents and brothers. As of Sunday night, the community had raised nearly $160,000 for Lydia.
