A 20-year-old fire cadet died from a medical emergency during training at the College of the Sequoias Fire Academy campus in Hanford, California, on August 10. The cadet has been identified as Eric Arzate, who pursued a long-held dream of becoming a firefighter.

Fellow cadets and on-site paramedic staff provided aid to Arzate until first responders arrived. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he passed away the following day. The cause of the medical emergency remains under investigation.

Arzate's family described him as a "beautiful person" who consistently prioritized others. According to his family, he dedicated years to acquiring skills to save lives and volunteered with local first responder programs. They noted that becoming a firefighter was one of his greatest aspirations and that he worked diligently to achieve it.

Graduates of the College of the Sequoias Fire Academy typically go on to become professional firefighters. Arzate's passing occurred three years after the death of his father, Raul, with whom he shared a passion for music and were both talented musicians, according to his family.

A GoFundMe campaign established for Arzate's memorial expenses has raised over $13,700 towards a $30,000 goal. His family stated they find comfort in imagining Arzate and his father together again, making music.
